Texas teens test law protecting unborn

Something I've started doing lately is reading the news a little more than usual. Today I came across this article: The Globe and Mail: Texas teens test law protecting unborn. I decided to post a link and see what people had to say about it. It raises an interesting issue - should the teen father be prosecuted? Should the mother? Neither? How many rights do the unborn have? I'm interested in your opinions, because I'm not sure what I think myself.

Why do kids get themselves into such messes. However I think it's completely ridiculous that the would-be father is getting charged with murder and the would-be mother gets off totally free. There is something wrong there. Also it is true mothers do have rights about keeping the baby or not and are protected from abusive males, but in this situation none of that should apply. She had the legal and allowed amount of time to make that decision to give up the baby. When that time past, so did her rights and there she needs to be punished. Although I don't know how harsh the punishment should be since like the article says, they are young kids that aren't mature to make these decisions, but someone has to set the example for the rest of society so things of this horrific nature don't continue to happen un-punished. I don't know that's only what I think.

I agree that the father of the twins being charged with capital murder is ridiculous, especially when the mother was complicit. This case raises the issue of when an unborn baby becomes a person, and when it is still a fetus with no legal rights - a question that I don't feel comfortable answering. This is one of the problems with the law - it is monolithic, when so many situations can't be so easily determined. At what point does an abortion become illegal in the US? In Canada? I don't know. I guess that time frame determines when the law thinks that the baby has developed enough to have rights of its own. It is a shame to have this happen when they are so young... the father will have this on his record forever (unless he's aquitted), and that seems a shame.

My gross out factor was way surpassed though at the method of their at-home abortion.
